A burglar in Italy was arrested on the spot for… reading Homer

The news that a burglar broke into an old man’s house, picked up a book and was reading has gone viral in the Italian media. The 38-year-old allegedly entered an apartment in the Prati district of Rome from the balcony. His attention fell on Homer’s Iliad and… he forgot to steal.

The 71-year-old owner of the house woke up and confronted the burglar, who was engrossed in the book.

The thief tried to escape from the same balcony, but was caught a short time later. He told the police that he went up to the building to visit an acquaintance. He had in his possession a bag of expensive clothes, which had been stolen from another house the same night.

The failed burglary drew the attention of the book’s author, Giovanni Nucci (Giovanni Nucci), who stated to the Media that he wishes to send the man a copy to finish reading.

It’s fantastic. I’d like to find the person caught red-handed and give them the book, because they’ll be caught halfway through reading it. I wish he could finish it. It is a surreal story, full of humanity” the author of The Gods at Six O’Clock, which analyzes the Iliad from the perspective of the gods, told Il Messaggero (via the BBC).

He added, no, how his favorite god is Hermes, patron of thieves and literature. It’s clear, everything fitshe joked.
