“10-10-10” Method: The reasoning that will help you make the right decisions

A person is called upon to make about 35,000 decisions in a day. But how will he manage to get the most correct ones?

OR decision making often it is not an easy task. Especially in some cases the decisions we are asked to make can have far-reaching consequences – at work, in our friendships or in our personal relationships. OR 10-10-10 method it is meant to help us make the right decisions at every moment.

Have you thought about how many decisions we have to make every day? According to a study by the University of Potsdam a man can get up to 35,000 different decisions within a day. Naturally, most of them are not particularly important, since they concern e.g. which pants to wear, whether to tie the left or right shoelace first, etc.

But there are more important decisions we will make during the day, which may affect our lives to a greater extent. Thus, the American management consultant and author Suzy Welch has developed a simple but effective technique intended to help with important decisions: the 10-10-10 method.

Admittedly, this method is not entirely new, as Welch wrote and explained it to her readers in 2009 in her famous book titled, “10-10-10 : 10 Minutes, 10 Months, 10 Years – A Life-Transforming Idea”. According to the expert, it is important to first realize all the options of action and think carefully about the consequences of the decision to be made:

  • within the next 10 minutes
  • within the next 10 months
  • within the next 10 years

Essentially, it is about imagining three different future scenarios and integrating the results of the decision that will be made into them. The important thing is not to be too complicated. And above all to imagine future scenarios that come as close as possible to the expected scenario. Thus, we will have the opportunity to make a decision as close to our own wants.
