A woman who chose to stay 3 whole days on the most dangerous island in the world, gives survival tips for those who dare to attempt something similar.
“Danger tourism” is definitely a thing, as for some the lack of safety is the point, especially if they go not only for their own enjoyment but also for an online audience.
Some travelers have made a career out of traveling the world and posting their experiences on YouTube, going places most viewers wouldn’t dare.
One of those trying it out is Maddie Ryles, who traveled to Australia’s Fraser Island and stayed there for three days.
Why is this particular island considered so dangerous?
Before she went, Maddie had been warned about snakes and spiders, but was told that most snakes would try to avoid human contact, except for “death vipers.”
You wouldn’t want to encounter a death viper as it has large teeth and is extremely venomous. Luckily for her there is now an antidote, but before that 60% of human bites were fatal.
Some of the spiders on Fraser Island are also venomous, including a special variation of the funnel-web spider, which is six times more venomous and has one of the deadliest venoms in the world.
There are also around 200 dingoes on the island, which you are advised to avoid. But wildlife isn’t the only thing to worry about…
One of the reasons for the island’s reputation as the most dangerous is that the currents around the shores are strong enough to make it difficult for even strong swimmers, and sharks and jellyfish can lurk there.
Maddie said it looked like “heaven” when she got there and there were some places that were pretty safe, but at one point she looked around and saw a giant spider crawling up her leg.
After making it through her journey, she shared with her audience tips for going to such a place.
Her survival tips
“My advice to you is to check the weather and bring warm clothes just in case,” he said.
“Be sure to bring insect repellent because there are insects everywhere and be extra careful, especially when driving.
“But also don’t let the fear of driving get to you.”
He also encouraged people to “do things that scare them a little.”
