Selfishness (and selfishness), indifference to the commons and ultimately violence, a lot of violence, from the tenderest age. The ill points of the times of our time, which jeopardize the present and the future of our society, at least as we would like it to be, are the result of multifactorial causes, with a common component, however. What is missing is the ability to think for our neighboras we think about ourselves.
This is not only a concept of Ethics, or some Christian or philosophical view, but starts from something more complex and simple at the same time, which is deeply rooted in psyche of the individual, already from a very young age.
OR Tonia Nikolaidis, Positive Psychologist BSc., MSc. Mindfulness Trainerhe clarifies speaking to Newsbomb.grthat intelligence is not only the cognitive ability of the individual, our known intelligence (IQ), but this is a multifactorial “construct”.
“One of them is the “EQ“, i.e. the emotional intelligence. It is about the person’s ability to perceive his emotions, to be able to manage them to his advantage, to mobilize towards goals by controlling impulsivity,” he explains.
“Since the individual can do these, then comes the empathywhich is the ability to perceive the feelings, motivations and behavior of another and to show a sensitivity towards them,” he adds.
Today, however, “our society is emotionally disabled. All Western societies emphasize the former rather than the latter. This is a result of the evolution of human society, which eventually through the ages, suppresses instinct and emotion, and emphasizes learning. The feeling didn’t die though – it exists within usbut now in a latent form, since we do not listen to it and do not take it into account”, explains the psychologist.
And the issue, contrary to what many believe, is not just the parents. “OR family it plays a very important role but not the absolute one. After all, the modern parent does not spend much time with his children. Children now come into contact with other role models from a very young age. Parents, usually, cannot properly train their child in emotional intelligence, both due to lack of time and also because… they don’t even know how to do that,” he explains.
However, if this were to change, believes Tonia Nicolaidis, then “the benefits would be enormousas long as individuals and by extension society functioned with emotion as the primary principle. When we learn to listen to our feeling and accept it – and the negatives of coursesuch as sadness or fear – then we understand why emotions are born, and they are born to tell us something. They have to we acceptafter we recognize them. Usually the difficult feelings are the ones that teach us something – there are no positives and negatives that’s why I call them that, we always have something to gain from them and they help us understand who we are.”
To conclude: “Emotional intelligence is the cornerstone of mental resilience. When I know who I am, my strengths and weaknesses, then I can cope with any situation.
So the time has come to include emotional intelligence programs in schools – this is already happening in foreign countries. A society is slow to transform, however if such programs were introduced from kindergarten, then in 10-12 years we would see rapid results”.
