A seemingly ordinary photograph taken in 1941 has sparked an interesting online debate, with some users claiming it may contain evidence of ‘time travel’.
“Cinephile carrying an iPad, far right”
The image, captured by photographer Edwin Rosskam on Chicago’s South Side, shows a group of well-dressed young people queuing to enter a movie theater. However, it’s a detail in the background that has caught the attention of netizens.
At the far right of the photo, a teenager is seen holding a rectangular object that looks strikingly like a modern tablet or iPad. This detail has led some to speculate that the young man may have been a time traveler, accidentally transporting a device from the future to the past.
The photo was shared on Reddit’s timetravelerscaught community, where one user pointed out: “Cinephile carrying iPad, far right.”

Another user agreed: “If you zoom in close, this is too big to be a ‘book’ or ‘notebook’, plus you can see what looks like the iconic Apple logo on the back of it.”
However, others believe the young man is simply holding a notebook, with one commenter saying: “Looks like a book to me.”
Another user provided some historical context, stating, “In the early days of cinema, taxi drivers scoured the audience for pens and notebooks to prevent bootleg reproductions of the film.” Another commenter admired the photo’s vintage charm, saying, “It’s all so beautifully dressed. Wearing your Sunday clothes to the cinema must have been a fantastic experience.’
